Karo Szmit: Picture Me on Facebook

Posted on: June 11th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Karo Szmit set up behind the Durham Town Hall at the Country Garden Herb Fair this afternoon drawing portraits of people’s online persona. In her performance Karo illustrated spoof caricatures of her muses, allowing them to sit while she drew the blue and white stencil default profile image found on the social networking website Facebook. In the image below, Karo just finished sketching Alexis O’Hara who delivered a stellar musical and wearable electronics performance last night.

Alexis O’Hara: Subject to Change

Posted on: June 11th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Alexis O’Hara delivered an electrically intense performance… in more ways than one. Utilizing conductive copper wire sewn into her dress, wearable electronics and Max/MSP software, Alexis triggered recordings of questions telephoned in by public participants. She then proceeded to answer these questions in the form of song or spoken word, layering and manipulating her voice with musical sequencers, prerecorded beats and effects pedals. The performance was delivered off the cuff and saturated with O’Hara’s brilliantly dry and witty humor. She is an absolutely captivating performer whose art lives on the cutting edge of technology and musical performance.

The Best of Parsons and Morel

Posted on: June 11th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Comedy duo Parsons and Morel entertained the crowds with their quirky humor last night at the Durham Town hall. Infusing song and satire their lyrics poke fun at technology, new media and Canadian pop culture. Their routine is seamlessly performed, and along with melodic skills, they are also talented actors.

Opening Night: CrissCross & InterPlay

Posted on: June 11th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Artists in residence Laura Kikauka, Jessica Field, Ken Gregory, Andrew McPherson and Karo Szmit saw nearly a months work come to fruition last night at the Durham Art Gallery’s CrissCross exhibition opening. InterPlay included Steve Daniels and Isabella Stefanescu artwork which was also displayed in the gallery, and the night was well attended and well received. Steve Daniels’ creatures were busy with movement as viewers waved their arms and interacted with them. Isabella had viewers absorbed by moving stones on a large scale which controlled audio along with projected images of her personal notebooks. CrissCross flashed with colored lights, bright candy, and the pulsating sounds of Andrew’s audio installation and Jessica’s mechanical black box.

Symposium Day 1: Afternoon

Posted on: June 11th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Marcel O’Gorman, David Jhave Johnston, Martha Ladly shared their extensive knowledge and body of work at Friday afternoon’s symposium. Marcel O’Gorman, Director of the Critical Media Lab at the University of Waterloo discussed Necromedia: Death, Self and Technology. He shared works such as Dreadmill, in which he lectures about the impact of technology on the body while running on an interactive treadmill interface. David Jhave Johnston delivered a poetic lecture that illuminated his deeply personal web based works of art. Raw and captivating, he addressed prevailing themes in his art work: vulnerability, knowledge, innocence, loneliness and epiphanies. Martha Ladly’s topic was Mobile Art and Design: Responsive Environments and Social Practices. She showed mobile art and design that uses methods of urban intervention as a form of art, social change, critique, and community building. She is an Associate Professor at OCAD University with expertise in the areas of Research, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Interaction Design.

Symposium Day One: Geoffrey Shea

Posted on: June 10th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Geoffrey Shea, artist and OCAD University professor was the first presenter to speak to today’s symposium topic, Social Authorship: Where Do Ideas Come From? His playfully titled presentation Poking and Prodding: Working in a Mode of Interrogation highlighted the duality of asking and telling in the world of the artist who delves into research practice. This playfulness spills over into the work that Geoffrey showcased, including an interactive music projection piece called TRIO exhibited at Nuit Blanche in Toronto. The piece allowed over 3000 onlookers to phone a number from their cell phones which would make changes to the musical performance being projected on the screen. Geoffrey spoke also about other pieces featured on his website, including Drawing of a Man, a large scale video projection of himself engaged in the process of drawing.

See the Lights!

Posted on: June 9th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Colors pulsate to an observable rhythm, the lights are red, green, blue, and fly… wait fly? Laura Kikouka is behind these quirky lamps, one created with fly paper, another with bits of electronic parts. They illuminate the room in style, Laura’s oddball- chic aesthetic never fails to attracts and intrigue viewers. The main work is a large decadent found chandelier that hangs over the pulse device. See the lights Friday!

Hearing the Common Pulse

Posted on: June 9th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Yesterday, Andrew McPherson smoothed out last minute details regarding the electronics of his pulse signal with Norman White. together they spent time making sure everything would go as planned for tomorrow’s opening night. His sound installation is set up on three pillars with the Arduino mirocontroller as the featured visual center piece. The installation, including the audio which is the main element of the work, emerges successfully from an elegantly minimalist approach. the sound is beautiful and haunting, but I wont give anymore away. Please hear for yourself, Friday!

Places Everyone!

Posted on: June 7th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Jessica Field is now placing all the electronic characters into the structure she has built to display at the Common Pulse festival this Friday. nearly assembled, this structure is built with a few ways to peep inside, and you will be surprised at what you find looking back!

Where is that voice coming from?

Posted on: June 7th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

A lovely voice is drifting out from the upstairs loft at the Durham Art Gallery, singing nostalgic and lonely songs. The room flashes to the common pulse, green, red and blue lights transforming the hue of the white curtain that covers the window of the loft. It is a mysterious performance, who’s voice is this, and where has Karo gone… hmmm… hear the songs and see the lights, Friday!

A Pensive Approach

Posted on: June 7th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Ken Gregory is behind me trimming wires, refining his final set up and ‘debugging his circuits’. The artists are all very busy and deep within the process of installation and concluding their work. There is a creative buzz in the atmosphere at the Durham Art Gallery, and it’s intensity increases with each passing moment as we approach this Friday’s opening night!

The Funny Farm

Posted on: June 7th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Artists Karo Smitz, Ken Gregory, and Andrew McPherson attended an early dinner party on Saturday afternoon at Laura Kikauka’s infamous funny farm. To say the least, everyone was dazzled by the indescribable visual overload created by floor to ceiling to wall to mirror to shower curtain…etc. covered in collected colorful and kitschy items. The artists were also excited by the delicious food spread. For more info about the funny farm, look HERE. The photos were taken by Andrew and Karo.

Artist Talks: Laura Kikauka

Posted on: June 5th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Of course Laura Kikauka shook up convention by casting Norman White and thirteen year-old Gabriel Strelock to deliver an eccentric performance-like artist talk. Norman white is a fellow artist and in the past was Laura’s professer at OCAD U. Norman spoke with respect and admiration about Laura’s art works, which incorporates vibrant found objects that she has collected over the years with working electronics. Her work is eye catching to say the least, and often performance based. She has in two locations, one in Canada and one Berlin a residence which she has called the funny farm. It is a home and site specific art installation all in one. Laura’s work encompasses everything from installation, mixed media, electronic sculpture, drawing, photography, video, performance, music, text and costume creations.

Artist Talks: Jessica Field

Posted on: June 5th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Jessica Field impressed audience members with her technical intelligence and vast knowledge regarding robotics. She showed us a variety of works from her website, please feel free to browse through yourself. Her robot creations are highly interactive and react both to the viewer and other robots, often in humorous and playful ways. One project entitled Tantalus Synthesis, showcased three robots, which danced for the viewer, and the intensity of its movement increased to compete with the other robots for the viewers’ attention. Jessica’s work is the synthesis of good humor, creativity, and a wide skill set from woodworking and construction to circuitry and programming. See what she creates opening night!

Artist Talks: Ken Gregory

Posted on: June 5th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Ken Gregory is an eclectic artists, it seems as though no materials are out of his reach. He works with electronics and sound, and creates thoughtful and complex installations that operate partly through reacting to its audience, yet still retaining a kind of autonomous, or rebellious self-thinking integrity. He had listeners memorized and silent as they heard recordings of his haunting audio installations. We listened to the song of the wind via Ken Gregory’s large installation entitled wind coil sound flow. His website describes it as follows, “An electro-mechanical system that poetically reproduces the processes involved in operating an Aeolian Kite Instrument in the field, a wind instrument based on an Aeolian harp”. Among other works, he also showed us 12 Motor Bells, a computer controlled electro-mechanical audio installation using modified fire alarm bells. Please look at his website for a fuller description and come see what Ken Gregory creates for Common Pulse.

A Second Dinner Date…

Posted on: June 3rd, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Before delivering their talk, artists and community members gathered together to share another fabulous dinner at the Rowan Moon Bistro. The savory dishes included asparagus with fennel and honey sauce, mixed green and fruit salad, and the main course, fish with melted cheese and baby potatoes. It was just what the artists needed to get energized and generate discussion around their fascinating technological works of art. Ken Gregory and Jessica Field captivated us and opened our minds to a new way of viewing electronics when framed within the world of art practice. Laura Kikauka’s put her usual spin on the conventional artist talk, turning it into a performance piece in itself. Read on to learn more!

Progress Reports: Ken Gregory

Posted on: June 2nd, 2011 by Justine No Comments

A question: What does electronics, and colorful hand made candy have in common? Ask Ken Gregory! He will deliver a talk tonight that will enlighten us about his personal art practice, and how he makes connections like these work. The transparent candy is illuminated by flashing LED’s animated in different patterns that Ken programmed himself. Somehow it appears that candy and technology were made for each other!

Progress Reports: Karo Szmit

Posted on: June 2nd, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Karo is looking a little sad in this photo, but she is only being silly! Really, she is in the process of setting up a mini light show and ‘party room’ in an unexpected location. Her work will surely include a performance aspect and incorporate Karo’s witty and charming sense of humor. She has bravely moved away from creating a piece using her usual methods, and is experimenting with electronics and light. It will be exciting to see what she comes up with, Please witness the show’s unveiling June 10th!

Progress Reports: Andrew McPherson

Posted on: June 2nd, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Andrew has everyone talking into the mic, reciting the line (and residency’s main theme) “Common Pulse”. Interestingly enough, the same words sound so different depending on who’s saying them. The individuality of each voice comes through even within the parameters of this short and sweet one liner. What will Andrew make of these recordings? Find out for yourself opening night Friday June 10th.

Progress Reports: Laura Kikauka

Posted on: June 2nd, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Laura Kikauka has a knack for gathering fantastic found objects and incorporating them into visually stimulating installations. This time, she happened to hit a real electronics goldmine. Laura came back to the Durham Art Gallery yesterday, and with her she brought drawer upon drawer of electronic storage and vintage recording equipment. How she does it is a mystery! The space she occupies in the Gallery appears as an artistic installation in itself, she seems to find a way to leave her signature flair wherever she goes! Come see her talk tonight!

Progress Reports: Jessica Field

Posted on: June 2nd, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Piles of electronics scattered across Jessica Field’s table are beginning to take shape as art form. Whimsical creatures such as a toy hula dancer, clown heads, and doll parts are being affixed to technology. Each character carries their own metaphorical meaning significant to the Common Pulse theme. She is planning on building a structure for all of this to ‘live’ in, but for now, I won’t give any more away… Come see for yourself! Or hear Jessica talk tonight, grab a ticket!

Weekend Workshops: Autonomous Robot Creatures

Posted on: May 31st, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Electronics and technology can be a rather daunting and intimidating subject to teach oneself. But this past Sunday’s workshops with artists Jessica Field and Laura Kikauka made the topic of robot creation fun, accessible and informative! Participants learned about the individual parts that made up their robot creatures and assembled them to create their own movable creation. Once the robot was assembled, they were adorned with various decorations to give each bot it’s own individual flair…

Weekend Workshops: Scrapyard Guitars

Posted on: May 30th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

It was such a pleasure to participate in Ken Gregory’s workshop, building a take home working instrument from scrap parts. The group varied from those who had never used a power tool before to very skilled builders. In the end, the range of results were as diverse as the people creating the instruments! Ambitious participants teamed up and made a large sculptural harp-like instrument that three people could play at once. One, two, three or more strings were affixed to the scrapyard guitars designed and at the end of the day participants were able to jam together. Some guitars were plugged into an amplifier using a contact mic, and effects were applied with a pedal provided by musician in residence Andrew McPherson to experiment with an endless variety of aurally dazzling possibilities! If you would like to see more photos on the workshop and updates on the festival from Ken Gregory’s perspective, please take a look at his blog! Here are some photos from the workshop:

Andrew McPherson: Artist Talk

Posted on: May 29th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Andrew McPherson showed a few examples of his vast and eclectic musical repertoire. In particular, recordings of a live performance in which he and fellow band member Deliveryboy of Eccodek created a new soundtrack to accompany Fritz Lang’s 1927 dystopian classic Metropolis. Andrew’s musical reach extends across international borders, and he collaborates with musicians all over the world. He has a taste for world music, and we heard a few song clips, including Eccodek’s “Bizuru dub” (Eccodek’s Steppers dub remix) taken from the album More Africa in us and Remixtasy. Take a listen for yourself: look at his website, or view the artist bio via Common Pulse’s website.

Karo Szmit: Artist Talk

Posted on: May 29th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

The artists shared examples of their work and allowed audience members to glimpse into their creative minds. Karo had the audience laughing hysterically with an animation she created with Clemens Kogler, entitled “Le Grand Content”. She also spoke of a work entitled “Things I never did”, in which she displayed as a graph her unrealized and unfinished ideas from the past years . Please follow this link to her blog, to look at more of her thoughtful and quirky art, and gain insight into the works mentioned. Also, check out the artists bios on the Common Pulse website for a fuller description.

Ken Gregory has been blogging about his progress at the Common Pulse artist residency. Follow the fun – have a look at his LED candies and Scrapyard Guitars in process.

Ken has built 2 guitars in preparation for tomorrow’s Scrapyard Guitars workshop at the Gallery, and the haunting sound of swampy primal blues has been resonating through the Gallery ever since. The richness of the sound you can coax from an old plank, some wire and a tin box is truly inspiring.

There is still time to register for the workshop: 10am to 3pm, $35 for members, $45 for non-members, ages 12 and up. Local artists are encouraged to participate. Call 519-369-3692 ASAP or register online.

The Clock of Life

Posted on: May 26th, 2011 by Justine No Comments

Laura Kikauka has spent decades collecting and sorting found objects to create artworks and installations that saturate the senses. Her desk space is filled with these visually stimulating objects. The photos below depict Laura dressed in brilliant red, along with a plaque she found at a thrift store. The poem written on it is entitled The Clock of Life, and it’s words Laura says tie into her idea of the common pulse theme. In front of the plaque is a sculptural piece, which was once an experiment created by Norman White; artist, teacher, and “fussy logic” pioneer. Thursday June 2nd there will be an artist talk and dinner featuring both Laura Kikauka and Norman White, along with other artists in residence Jessica Field and Ken Gregory. Please click the link to get registered! These artists will certainly surprise and enlighten us with their original insights regarding technology, found objects and combining seemingly disparate parts to create a fascinating work of art.
